Run both Chrome OS and Ubuntu on a Chromebook

The first thing you must do is enable the Chromebook's Developer Mode, but be aware that this will erase anything you may have saved to the device's internal storage. Press and hold the Esc and Refresh keys, and then press the power button. The Chromebook will reboot into Recovery Mode.

Press the keyboard's Enter key to turn OS verification off and confirm the decision to turn on the Chromebook's Developer Mode. A red exclamation point and a warning that OS verification has been turned off will be displayed on the screen, followed by two loud beeps, this is normal.

Sit back and wait as this process could take up to 10 minutes to complete. Don't panic if you see a red exclamation point after Developer Mode has been enabled, the system will reboot back into Chrome OS shortly.

After doing so, you must download a tool known as Crouton, which will allow Ubuntu to run on top of Chrome OS. Save the file to your download folder and then open the Chromebook's terminal by pressing the Ctrl, ALT, and T keys together.

Type "shell" in the command line and hit the Enter key. Next, type "sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t unity" and wait for Crouton to install. If your Chromebook has a touch screen use the command "sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t touch,unity" instead.

You will be asked to enter a username and password once the installation process is complete. This is separate from your Chrome OS login and will be used inside of the Ubuntu operating system. To enter Ubuntu type the command "sudo startunity" into the terminal.

Click on the first icon on the left-hand side of the screen and search for the terminal. Once inside of it, type "sudo apt-get update" in the command line to update the operating system. When that's complete, type "sudo apt-get install software-center," this will allow you to easily install a wide variety of Linux programs. You can open the software center and search for the specific program you want, or you can download programs from the Web and install them through the software center.

Moving from Windows or OS X to a Chromebook

Signing in

It is very easy to setup your Chromebook within seconds. If you already have Google account then connect to a Wi-Fi network and sign in.



Exploring the settings 

By clicking Alt on the desktop, two options get revealed: toggling the shelf of apps to hide or remain persistent, and to change the wallpaper. You can find time, battery life, and your avatar available on the lower right-hand side of the shelf. If you click on this section, you can get more detailed information regarding Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth connectivity, and many more. On clicking Settings option, a new Chrome tab appears. With this, you can change your default search engine and customize your Chromebook with new wallpaper. In this menu, you can also change settings related to touch pad, keyboard, and display.

Keyboard

The biggest change that you can see will be the Chromebooks’s keyboard. You can make mistakes while hitting keys especially for copy and paste. You can find only Ctrl and Alt key in Chromebook. Caps Lock is also replaced by Search key through which you can search content on your Chromebook, Internet and Google Chrome Web Store. The Caps Lock feature in Chromebook can be enabled by clicking the Alt and Search keys.



There are other keys also that are missing including Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, and Delete. But, you can access them using other methods. For Home function, you can replace it by clicking Ctrl, Alt, and the up arrow. While the End button is replaced by Ctrl, Alt, and the down arrow. When you press Alt key with up arrow, it will replicate Page Up function. And, on pressing Alt with down arrow replaces the Page down function. For deleting your previous word, press Ctrl and Backspace.



You will also find the top row changed. Function keys have replaced by various browser and system commands. The first three functions depict going back to your previous page, moving forward, and reloading the page. The two keys with squares on them are for full-screen mode and switch to next window. Apart from this, the last five keys functions to control basic system commands like reducing brightness, volume mute, etc.

Shortcuts



Don’t worry; Chromebook supports large number of keyboard shortcuts through which you can easily access various commands. Capture a screenshot using Ctrl with next window key (F5). And, to select the small portion of the captured screenshot use Ctrl, F5, and Shift. These screenshots get saved in the Download folder which can be accessed in the Chrome OS file manager. Furthermore, by pressing Ctrl and O keys also you can open that captured screenshots.
For locking your Chromebook, hold Ctrl, Shift, and L keys. And, swapping the L key for the Q will log off completely. In order to open apps quickly, select the Alt key with numbers 1 through 9.
