Protected View feature in Office 2010 or Office 2013

To turn off Protected View feature in Office 2010 or Office 2013 version, check out following simple steps:

1. First launch any Office program such as Microsoft Word and then click on File menu present in the ribbon.

2. Now click on Options tab present in the left sidebar.

3. It'll open Options window. Now click on "Trust Center" tab given at the end in left-side pane and then click on "Trust Center Settings" button.

It'll open a new window to customize Trust Center settings.

4. Click on "Protected View" tab and in right-side pane, you'll see following options:

Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet
Enable Protected View for files that are located in potentially unsafe locations
Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments

5. All options are enabled by default. Disable the desired option or disable all given options to turn off Protected View completely and click on OK button to save the changes.

6. Close the Office program and now whenever you open a file downloaded from Internet or attached in an email, it'll open normally instead of Protected View.

Microsoft Excel has stopped working.

Make sure that Windows is fully up-to-date

Install the latest Windows updates to your computer.

Restart your computer.

Try to launch your Microsoft Excel.

If after installing Windows updates you are still receiving a “stopped working” error, continue to the next section and follow the instructions.

Starting the application in Safe Mode is a great way to find out if the problem is caused by and add-in. To do this, go to your Start screen in Windows 8 or click Start > Run in Windows 7, and type one of the following commands:

Type excel /safe and press Enter to start Excel 2013.

If the Microsoft Excel doesn’t start in Safe Mode the try to  disable the add-ins one at a time.


With the Microsoft Excel still in Safe Mode, click File > Options > Add-Ins.
Next to the Manage list, click Go.
Uncheck one of the add-ins in the list and click OK.
Restart the Microsoft Excel (not in Safe Mode this time).


If the Microsoft Excel doesn’t start, repeat the steps to uncheck the other add-ins one by one. If all add-ins are unchecked and you still can’t open your Microsoft Excel, follow the steps under Troubleshooting COM Add-ins.


Click File > Options > Add-Ins.

In the Manage list, click COM Add-Ins, and then click Go.

Uncheck one of the add-ins in the list and click OK.

Restart the application (not in Safe Mode this time).

If the Microsoft Excel starts, the COM add-in you unchecked is causing the problem. We recommend you visit the company website for the add-in to find out if there’s an updated version you can install. If there isn’t a newer version or if you don’t need to use the COM add-in you can leave it unchecked.
