10 tips to help improve your wireless network

Keywords: improve wireless network, wireless network booster, improve wireless reception, how to improve wireless router signal

Description

If your Windows operating system notifies you about weak Wi-Fi signal then it means your connection is not up to the mark. In order to boost the signal for your wireless network (WLAN), try this tutorial.

Solution:

1. By keeping your wireless router, modem router or access point in a central position, you can improve your connection.

2. Metal objects can interfere with router’s wireless signals. Thus, keep router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects to boost your connection.

3. Antennas provided with your router are designed to send signals in all directions. Therefore, if your router is near an outside wall than half of the signals are going outside. Also, if your router doesn’t allow you to increase the power output then replace it with high-gain antenna.

4. Wireless signals can be sent to and from your computer. But, sometimes computer is not able to send signals back to your router. For this, replace your laptop’s PC card-based wireless network adaptor with a USB wireless network adapter which uses an external antenna.

5. You can add wireless repeaters to extend your wireless range and boost the strength of wireless signal instantly.

6. Wireless routers can broadcast on several different channels. If one wireless channel is not clear, you can try the other one. To know the router configuration page, consult this reference table. If it is not mentioned here then read the documentation that came with your router.

7. If your wireless technology is suffering interference then you need to quiet other wireless electronics which are using the same frequency. If your network uses wireless-G, you can silent the noise by avoiding wireless electronics that use the 2.4 GHz frequency. As an alternative, look for cordless phones and other devices that use the 5.8 GHz or 900 megahertz (MHz) frequencies.

8. Further, you can update your firmware or network adapter driver. It will improve the performance and reliability.

9. Always choose the equipment from a single vendor as some vendors provide a performance boost if you choose their hardware.

10. Last but not the least, change or upgrade your technology. Wireless-N is fast with better range and stability. And, Wireless-N is backward-compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Also, if you are using wireless-B or wireless-G and tired of its slow performance then replace it with wireless-N equipment.
