Difference between malware, viruses, worms, Trojans, scare ware, adware, rootkits, spyware, & key loggers

Description

Love to go online? If your answer is ‘yes’ then you must have heard the terms like virus, malware, spyware, adware, etc. But, don’t you get confused among these terms? I am sure; it’s hard to deny. Well in this Techvedic tutorial, we are explaining you each and every term.

Solution:

1.      Malware- It means any malicious code like virus, other worm, Trojan, etc. It can:
§  Corrupt your computer or its programs
§  Perform against the wish of the user
§  Block your system or networks
§  Act as a spy

Hereby, we are discussing the categories of malwares in detail:

Ø  Virus- It is not a very big term and covers one of the categories of the malware. Virus means anything which can attack any executable file to harm computer or network or data. This is something which waits for you to act upon so that it can replicate.
Ø  Worms- It is an advanced form of virus which is capable of self-replicating. By this, it can exploit the computer system as well as network. By replicating themselves in large quantities, they consume network and disk space. Ultimately, they block the computer or network system.
Ø  Trojans- It is a program that apparently performs useful things, but the actuality is different. In short, it can steal your data or infect computer.
Ø  Scareware- On clicking over some pop ups, if a message came like your computer is at risk or infected with various viruses, then chances are there your system had got compromised with scareware. They target to extract money from users and do not provide any antivirus in return.
Ø  Ad ware- These are undesirable programs that keep coming on your computer screen against your wish, thereby, disrupting your attention.
Ø  Rootkit- These are dangerous as they take the administrative control of your computer and pass this control to the perpetrator to do anything with it.
Ø   Spyware- It acts like a spy which passes your important and confidential information to remote perpetrators.
Ø  Key logger- This is really very harmful as it can track keys which you have pressed on your keyboard. Thus, it may track your online banking and shopping activities.
