How to upgrade or replace your PS4's hard drive?

Description

It is well-known to you that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are equipped with a 2.5-inch 500 GB hard drive. But, you can replace or upgrade this hard drive in PlayStation 4 only.

Solution:

Here is the way to do this:

Tools

The hard drive must be of 2.5-inch drive and contain the space of 160GB. Also, you need a USB flash drive with at least 1GB of space, a Phillips-head screwdriver and computer with Internet connection.

Process

As the console is lying flat, you have to apply pressure to the glossy black cover and slide it down. You will find the screw with old PlayStation shapes. Remove it.

Take the hard drive tray out and remove all the four screws. After this, replace the drive with the new one. Insert the drive back into the system and replace the PlayStation screw. Putting the cover back to its place may be a little tricky. Don’t slide it from the bottom and just put it from the top.

Update

Go to Sony's site and download the latest software update for the PlayStation 4 from your computer and connect USB flash drive to the computer. Then format it to FAT32. In Windows, you can do this by right-clicking the drive, select Format, choose “FAT32” option from the pull-down menu and click “Start” button.

After the completion of this, open the drive and create a folder titled “PS4.” Create another folder titled with “UPDATE” inside that folder and place the updated files inside it.

Console

Now, connect the power cord to the back of the console and plug in the HDMI port. Next, connect both the controller and USB flash drive. After this, turn the console on in Safe Mode. This can be done by holding the power button for 7 seconds. On the controller, click the PlayStation button if asked to do so and then scroll down to the “Initialize PS4” option. Then the update file will be copied from your drive to the console and install it by the system. When the installation task gets completed, PlayStation 4 will restart and boot as the first time. You have to create an account, sign in and download your content.
