How to Clone a Hard Drive?

Description

In case your hard drive is damaged or corrupted then it is better to have functional copy of the drive where you can store your stuff immediately. Cloning a drive is a good option for handling such situations. Have a look on this tutorial.

Solution:

Two Options: Clone or Image

Firstly, you need to choose between two options that whether you want to create a clone or disk image. Clone is a direct copy which stores data identical to the data on the original drive. Other than this, disk image is a snapshot of the drive data. It also makes the copy of the content but it performs this task in a single compressed file. This disk image is not immediately functional.

Tools and Utilities

There are so many tools available for those who want to create a clone of their drive. The backup utility available is Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5. For those looking for free popular alternatives, options are Macrium Reflect Free, ShadowCopy, Clonezilla, and EaseUS Todo Backup Free.

Destination Drive

You need to have an external drive or a bare drive for backing up all your stuff. After having the bare drive, you can either install it as a second drive or use a compatible drive enclosure for it. For cloning, you need hard drive which can at least hold as much as data you are cloning. Another option is external hard drive.

Clean up your files

Before going further in cloning your drive, perform some digital spring cleaning. You can find plenty of stuff saved which you don’t need at all. Clean it all first.

Making the Clone

After performing the above steps, go for cloning now. Hence, connect the destination drive, open up backup utility, and follow the utility's directions to copy the contents of your hard drive to the backup.

Caring for Clones

Now, you have the exact copy of the original drive. If you make any changes in files or programs then it will be reflected in original drive only. For more up to date backup, you need to create a fresh clone. To keep that clone safe, put the drive into an anti-static bag and then store it as your vital document.
