How to change drive letters--even when the letter you want isn't available

Description

For changing the drive letters, you need to follow certain steps. Let’s go through this tutorial.

Solution:

1. Firstly, you need to get to the Disk management tool.

2. If you are using Windows XP, Vista or 7, click “Start.”

3. Right-click on “Computer” and choose “Manage.” After the opening of Computer Management program, click “Disk Management.” It is available in the left pane, under storage.

4. In Windows 8, you can’t click “Start”. Thus, press WINKEY-X and select “Disk Management.” There you will see a graphic list of drives and partitions of those drives.

5. Check that the drive containing the partition you want to change should be listed. If it is not listed then see “My PC doesn't see the new, second hard drive.”

6. Further, check to see that another partition or device is already using the drive letter you want. In case, it is using then you need to change that drive first. For example; if you want your data partition to be D but your optical drive is already D then change the optical drive to something else. This will make D free.

It is recommended to leave the boot drive (probably C:) alone. For this:

1. By right-licking partition you want to change, select “Change Drive Letter and Paths.”

2. Click “Change” from the resulting dialog box.

3. From the next dialog box, choose your desired drive letter.

4. On clicking OK, a dialog box appears warning you that some programs may not work. If this problem arrives then go back again and change the letters.

5. Making a change in an external drive’s letter is not permanent. Thus, every time you plug a storage device into a USB port, Windows will give it the first available drive letter.

This is how you can change the drive letter. For more suggestions, contact Techvedic’s computer support helpdesk, as per below contact-details:
