Description
You can connect keyboard, USB hard drives as well as gaming controllers to your Android phone or tablet using a USB OTG adapter. Have a look on this tutorial.
Compatibility
Samsung family of Android phones and tablets are the most USB-friendly devices. As per the testing, we have found the following devices which are compatible to USB OTG:
• Samsung Galaxy S III (S3)
• Galaxy Nexus*
• Nexus 7*
• Droid RAZR
• Samsung Galaxy Tab
• Acer Iconia Tab A200
• Acer Iconia Tab A500
• Archos G9
• Notion Ink Adam
• Motorola Xoom
• Toshiba Excite 10
• Sony Tablet S
After going through this list, you must be clear that many Android phones still lack support for USB host mode. Possibly, OEMs will include the feature in future software updates.
How to use USB OTG adapter?
There are no specific set of instructions to use this USB OTG adapter. On plugging OTG adapter into your Android device, you will get a quick notification which let you know that phone or tablet has recognized the adapter. Below are the numbers of USB devices that we have tested using the Samsung Galaxy S III (S3):
USB thumbdrive- On plugging USB thumbdrive, you can play movies, music, view photos or documents available on your Android device. Also, you can copy or move files from your thumbdrive to phone’s SD card. If your device is not recognizing USB thumbdrive then try using it through an app like ES File Explorer.
Desktop keyboard- By connecting keyboard, you can use standard computer keyboard to type on your Android phone or tablet.
USB hub- For connecting keyboard and mouse simultaneously, you can use USB hub plugged into the OTG adapter.
Powered hard drive- A powered hard drive relies on external source for energy. Along with the hard drive connected, you can read, write and transfer stored files.
PS3 controller- By connecting Samsung Galaxy S III to PS3 controller, you can navigate the entire interface using the analog stick. Interestingly, the controller is compatible to some Android games.
Card reader- Photographers must be happy to know that card reader is compatible to USB OTG's. With this, you can shoot photos using your high-quality camera and upload them on the go via your Android phone or tablet.
USB-to-Ethernet adapter- Connect your USB-to-Ethernet adapter to USB OTG and enjoy wired Ethernet connection. This is helpful when Wi-Fi is not available.
DSLR camera- By coupling your OTG adapter with dSLR's USB cable, you can connect your camera to your phone or tablet.
Hopefully, more Android devices will provide support for USB hosting very soon. For more from the XpertCrewTM team, please follow us on Twitter @Techvedic or contact Techvedic’s computer support helpdesk, as per below contact-details:
