How to use iMac as an external monitor

If you have got an iMac made in mid-2011 or later, then one issue you'll be able to do with it's to use it as an external monitor. just like Target Disk mode, where one Mac's internal hard drives will be mounted as external drives via FireWire or Thunderbolt to a different system, Target display mode permits an iMac's show to be captured and utilized by a second macintosh.

To do this, first check the model of your iMac to ensure it was made in 2011 or later, and then simply press Command-F2. Note that on most Macs, the F-keys are assigned to a system function by default, so you will either have to revert this in the Keyboard system preferences, or hold the "Fn" key in addition to the Command key before tapping F2.

When you press this hotkey, the system will remain running, but the display will now be accessible through the Thunderbolt connection of the iMac.

You might surprise why this can be a feature, since it bypasses a wonderfully smart iMac computer to use it as an external monitor. while it's true using the iMac itself is also most well-liked in several cases, in others you may have a laptop computer (and particularly one with a small monitor) configured with software to perform a selected task, and you may ought to read this on a bigger show. If none are around, then you'll be able to use the iMac for this purpose.

The only issue you may want for this is a Thunderbolt cable.
