Speed up a slow PC without buying new hardware

Description

If your computer is working slowly then you should not blame the hardware always. You can improve speed by adding RAM, upgrading CPU or replacing hard drive with an SSD.

Solution:

Look for hog processes

You can check the processes that are hogging up lot of resources. Right-click the taskbar and choose “Start Task Manager.” Now, click the “Processes” tab and then CPU column header. The items that come at the top are the ones hogging your CPU. You can close the program running. If it doesn’t work then click “End process” button to kill the process. Also, you can go back on the Process tab and click the “Memory” column header to look for the culprit.

Clean out autoloaders

On starting, Windows loads additional programs which are very heavy. Thus, you need to bring up that list of autoloaders and by disabling and re-enabling them you can find the culprits. For windows XP, Vista or 7, click “Start”, type “msconfig” and then press “Enter.” As System Configuration comes up, click ‘Startup” tab. Here you can disable items by unchecking them. Windows 8 users can right-click the taskbar and select “Start Task manager.” Click “Startup” tab on seeing it. If you don’t, click “More details” and then “Startup.” For disabling any item, you can right-click it and select “Disable.”

Check for malware
Malware can cause problems and make your computer slow. To get rid of this, scan for it.

Do less multitasking

Try to run fewer programs at a time. Also, change your working habits.

Turn off Aero

This Aero improves the esthetic look of the screen. You can turn it off as it slows down the PC.
