Everyone is familiar about the term SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) which means small card slides into the back of many smartphones available in the market. Basically, it acts as an official identifier which depicts that your mobile phone belongs to you.
Solution:
As per the Security Research announcement, there was a flaw in older versions of DES encryption found on some SIM cards. By sending a fake text message with a fake encryption code, a test is performed to check that whether the phone will respond to this or not. In respond to this message, phone sends an encrypted digital signature which gives a hacker the ability to send malware to infect the phone or perform other unwanted actions. This is proved after testing that in 25 percent of the cases the phone responded to the fake text message.
This hack is designed to exploit older DES encryption schemes against the extra modern triple-DES protection available on more than half of currently available SIM cards. According to the researcher, 750 million out of billions of mobile phones used today may be susceptible to this exploit. GSM Association is giving information around the error which has been reached to mobile carriers. Criminals at least need six months to take advantage of this flaw. And, that time will be used for fixing the affected SIM cards.
