How to Separate “Devices and Drives” Section in Windows 8.1 Explorer “This PC”?

Description

You must have noticed this in Windows 8.1. In Windows 7, Vista or XP, you can see the hard drives, optical drives and removable drives in separate categories under My Computer Windows. But, Windows 8.1 has combined both partition under “Devices and Drives.” There is no way to unmerge “Hard disk drives” and “Devices with removable storage.” But, you can set group by type to “File system” in Windows 8.1.

Solution:

For changing the group by type, follow the below steps:

1. Open Windows 8.1 Explorer or “This PC” window and right-click on empty area. Then click on “Group by -> More..." option.

2. “Choose Details” window gets open. Enable “File System” checkbox and click “OK” button.

3. Right-click on empty area again and choose "Group by -> File System" option.

4. Now, you can see the separate sections of “hard disk drives” and “drives and devices with removable storage.”

Congrats, you have successfully separated hard disk drives and devices with removable storage. For more from the XpertCrewTM team, please follow us on Twitter @Techvedic or contact Techvedic’s computer support helpdesk, as per below contact-details:
